THIRTY

Ashley’s phone pings with a text. ‘It’s Tom. He’s bringing Elliot home.’

Susie pulls a face. ‘I don’t want to see him.’

‘You don’t have to. I’ll tell him I’m heading out. I need to take Rufus for a walk. I think it’s cool enough now. Do you want to come with us?’

Susie stands up. ‘I’ll go and get changed. Call me when Tom’s gone. Your pots need a water, by the way. You’ll lose those petunias if you’re not careful.’

Ashley looks around the patio at more wilted victims of the past twenty-four hours. ‘I’ll do it later.’

She picks up the iPad and phone and returns them to the safe. Elliot will ask whose they are if he comes across them. And it’s probably a good idea for Danny not to see them when he comes home. Elliot needs to be in bed before she tackles him over them.

Susie is upstairs when Elliot arrives home. Ashley squats down to greet her son.

‘Is Dad here?’ is the first question he asks.

Ashley’s heart aches for him. ‘Not yet. He should be back soon. Aunty Susie is upstairs, though.’ She’s hoping Tom takes the hint and makes a swift departure. He knows how her sister feels about him.

‘Yay.’ Elliot turns to Tom. ‘Thanks for dinner.’ He swiftly kisses Ashley on the cheek as he passes her, calling, ‘Aunty Susie,’ as he runs upstairs.

‘Any news?’ Tom asks, his face sharing her concerns. He seems on edge, his voice throaty as if he is trying to control his emotions. Is it because Susie is there? ‘I’ve not heard a thing from him all day.’ He sways from foot to foot.

‘Me neither. Not even from the bloody solicitor! If I’ve not heard anything by the time Elliot’s in bed, I’ll ask Susie to babysit while I go to the station. I’m going out of my mind here.’

‘Just keep me posted, won’t you? Mum and Dad are on their way home.’

So it won’t be long before she has them to contend with as well!

‘That’s good,’ Ashley says, faking a smile.

It’s another lie. She hates lying. ‘Liars never prosper,’ her mum used to always say to her dad. ‘You’ll ultimately pay the price for all your deception, darling.’ And he did. It cost him his wife and his two daughters.
